Overview

McCormick Taylor, Inc., a progressive transportation engineering and environmental planning firm, has an immediate opening for a Land Use Planner / Urban Designer in our Philadelphia, PA office. The ideal candidate will bring strong design skills and a thorough understanding of community planning, urban design, and multimodal transportation planning practices.

 

The position involves the creation of plans and drawings, urban design diagrams and maps, site design, drafting comprehensive and area plans, and ordinance writing. The desired candidate will also bring strong communications skills, and have interest in leading robust community outreach and public involvement programs designed to engage communities in the practice of planning.

Applicants should have a graduate degree in city planning, urban planning, or similar field. They should possess the ability to read and interpret concept plans and zoning maps; as well as architectural, engineering, and building plans.

The ideal candidate will have specific experience in multimodal transportation planning, project management and client coordination, facilitation and presentations, public meeting planning and design, database management and design, and maintaining overall quality control across projects.

 

Applicants should be proficient in or familiar with one or more urban planning software programs, including: ArcView/ArcGIS, Photoshop, Illustrator, SketchUp, AutoCAD, or similar. Hand sketching or rendering skills are a plus. Certification / accreditation through the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP), U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC-LEED), Professional Engineer (PE), American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), or similar is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Preparation of comprehensive plans and community master plans.
  • Compose technical documents that present findings using clear language and creative graphic presentation.
  • Organizing and facilitating meetings with officials, stakeholders and the public.
  • Playing a key role in developing solutions to policy and physical planning problems.
  • Maintain high standards and quality of work while demonstrating innovation and creativity in developing solutions for client projects.
  • Manage pieces of a project or have significant technical role under the supervision of a more senior staff member.
  • Develop supervisory skills and potentially provide guidance to more junior staff.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Urban and Regional Planning, Transportation Planning, Environmental Planning and Engineering, Civil Engineering, Public Policy, or other professionally recognized equivalent discipline.
  • 7+ years of experience.
  • Knowledge of planning best practices and concepts, economic development and environmental documentation principles and practices.
  • Functional knowledge of ArcGIS software.
  • Ability to organize data in an efficient and clear manner.
  • Excellent technical skills and strong personal initiative.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Works well in a team environment.
  • Ability to multi-task and work within a large team.

     Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in related field.
  • Registration as AICP, Professional Engineer, or RLA.
  • Thorough understanding of US Census Data analysis and manipulation.
  • Public Outreach experience.
  • Active participation in at least one relevant professional organization.
